Heating and air questions from Danville homeowners
Why is my AC blowing warm air?
Common causes include a tripped breaker or disconnect for the outdoor unit, a failed capacitor or contactor, a clogged filter, a dirty outdoor coil, or low refrigerant from a leak. Check the thermostat, filter and breakers first, then call a professional.
Why is there ice on my AC lines?
Usually restricted airflow (a dirty filter or blocked return), low refrigerant, or a blower problem. Turn the system off and set the fan to On to let it thaw, replace the filter, and call for service if it happens again.
My heat pump is blowing cool air. Is that normal?
Heat pump air often feels lukewarm compared to a furnace, and the outdoor unit goes through defrost cycles in cold weather. Steady cold air in heating mode, thick ice that won't clear, or constant emergency heat are not normal. See our heat pump page.
What should I do if I smell gas?
Leave the house right away and call 911 or your gas utility from outside. Don't flip switches or try to find the leak yourself.
How often should I change my air filter?
Check it monthly during heavy heating or cooling use and replace it when it looks dirty, or as your system's manufacturer recommends.
Should I repair or replace my HVAC system?
Repair usually makes sense for younger systems with minor failures. Replacement deserves a look when an older system needs a major part, leaks refrigerant repeatedly, uses R-22, or keeps breaking down. See repair vs. replace.
Is there still a federal tax credit for a new heat pump or AC?
The federal Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit was repealed for installations after December 31, 2025. Check with a tax professional about your situation, and be skeptical of anyone promising that credit for a 2026 installation.
Does an HVAC contractor need a license in Virginia?
Virginia requires a state contractor license for contracting work on a single job over $1,000. Technicians who handle refrigerant must also hold EPA Section 608 certification. You can look up Virginia licenses on the DPOR License Lookup.
How much does AC repair cost in Danville?
It depends on the problem, the parts and the contractor. We don't quote prices. Ask for the diagnostic fee and the full repair price before work begins.
